Khelo India Khelo

The Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Khelo India school games (31st Jan -8th Feb), at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. The prime minister asked youngsters to devote time to sports amid their busy schedules. “In your busy schedules, devote time to games, give priority to playing. Today, we have in our midst eminent sportspersons. I am sure they would have faced many obstacles but they did not give up and went on to distinguish themselves”. Sports play a very important role in MBIS school curriculum from the very beginning. MBIS recognises the numerous physical benefits of sports, along with the development of strategic & analytical thinking, leadership skills, goal setting and risk-taking. Students at MBIS are encouraged to actively participate in sports and look forward to participating in inter-school events. 33 students participated in the 16th Mumbai Inter-School Kudo tournament 2017 held at Andheri Sports complex winning in many categories. The students at MBIS learn to strive for excellence in academics and sports which is crucial to overall development.

Sports imparts important educational values, the importance of team spirit, the experience of working with different kinds of people in different situations. It helps children channelise their energy and provides them with the spirit of competition that drives them to put in extra efforts. If sport is inculcated from a very young age, it helps build character and discipline and takes the monotony out of daily routine.

At the 2018 Khelo India Interschool games, Under-17 athletes have been invited to participate across 16 disciplines, which are as follows: Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Football, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Shooting, Swimming, Volleyball, Weightlifting, and Wrestling.

These are a part of the “Khelo India Programme“, which has been introduced to revive the sports culture in India at the grass-root level. Talented players identified in priority sports disciplines at various levels by the High-Powered Committee will be provided annual financial assistance of INR 5 lakh per annum for 8 years.
