International Immersions

International Immersion is designed to expose students to work practices in an environment different from “home culture”. It helps students understand macro-economic situation, various economic parameters of the host country from business management perspective. During the immersion, students interact with leading Chamber of Commerce, global companies; attend lectures by eminent professionals and business heads on global economy & business practices. International Immersion Programme for the Management students is a unique initiative and a major differentiator with the other B-schools.

 

It provides the PGDM students with an in-depth exposure to the business environment, geo-political and cultures scenarios of other nationalities of a significant world market, thus preparing them better for a career in the integrated global economy. It further helps to create global consciousness and promote cultural sensitivity. It facilitates to establish network of overseas institutions for mutual exchange and learning.

 

This also helps students to get first-hand experience of the country and get acquainted with culture, work ethos, education, industries, economic and business policies which are instrumental in the accelerated growth of the nation. By traveling abroad to meet and interact with local business leaders, government officials and also academicians of some reputed universities, students have the opportunity to learn from a tremendous group of professionals while also immersing themselves in another culture and building life-long relationships.

 

The students are oriented and get a thorough hand on knowledge about the PESTEL analysis related to the international setting. The entire programme is oriented towards ensuring that the participants get a chance to relate their classroom learning to a real life situation and the vice a versa. It also provides insights on the various dimensions of international developments and Geopolitical system. Students are required to submit a report of their learning to ensure adequate absorption through this exposure. They are prompted to draw comparisons between different economic set-ups across the globe. Students are graded based on the knowledge gained during the immersion.

 

Students of the institute in consultation with a faculty co-ordinator, research and narrow down the countries and the industries or firms they would like to visit. The programme generally includes visits to places like Educational Institution of international repute (preferably a B School), Financial Institution (Bank, NBFC etc), Stock Exchange, Manufacturing Units, etc.

For the year 2019, 118 students along with five faculty members visited Germany, Switzerland and France in two groups.
DurgaDevi Saraf Insitute of Management Studies concluded its 8th flagship International Immersion The trip was special and unique in more ways than one. “On roll” journey, learning and fun altogether. The journey began in Munich, Germany right at Alliance Arena which has a 75,000 seating capacity. Widely known for its exterior of inflated plastic panels, it is the first stadium in the world with a full colour changing exterior.
BMW Welt located right besides its headquarters and city tour were the major attraction that were covered in the visit. Purchase of European souvenirs and to experience the exotic cars of BMW delighted the students.
This trip also provided them with a platform to be a part of Munich Business School, where they learned about the impact of Inflation on stock and bonds.
This endeavour was a unique experience since apart from offering students a deeper insight of the countries, it also helped them grasp the essential management and development lessons of these cities.
The next transfer touched down the beautiful city of Switzerland- Zurich. It began with an interactive session with Swiss Tourism which helped students understand management and marketing involved in the Industry. It also gave them an oversight of the major attractions of the country. It was followed by a trip to Porche Museum which amazed the students by its fine architecture and vintage collection.
Lake Zurich, the next stop was mesmerising. Chirping birds and sunset views, totally satisfying.
The next morning began with the journey towards the beautiful Rhine Falls, the students had a voyage in the falls, followed by the most awaited trip to the magnificent Mount Titlis in Engelberg. Snowfall, Mountain Peaks and Freezing temperature gave the most wonderful familiarity with the nature the students ever had.
Before relaxing for the night the group explored the city centre of Luzenberg, filled with twinkly products and frozen treats.
The next visit to Flyer was a perfect blend of learning and fun. Students learned the entire production and operations of the E-bikes along with the experience to ride one of them across the facility, which was a bliss with the breeze and the scenes around.
Right before departing was the stay at Chamonix, France a relaxing accommodation in an alpine garden at the foot of the Bossons Glacier. The trip on the whole was exquisite at its best.

114 students got the opportunity to explore the cities of varied importance, in different countries of the world, providing them an exposure to the world market. 1st group of 57 students and three faculty members departed on 25th September, 2018 and returned on 2nd October, 2018.2nd group of another 57 students along with two faculty members departed on 30th September 2018 and returned on 7th October, 2018.

The students of PGDM batch 2017-2019 went to Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Antwerp. The students enriched their learning about the importance of these historic places and their contribution in the economic participation of the EU. The objective was to expose to different cultures so that the students learn thru observation. Towards the end of the one week tour, the students had a wonderful learning experience and many memories to come back with.

On the 6th of September, 2017, the second year students of Durgadevi Saraf Institute of Management Studies (DSIMS) embarked on an International Immersion to Germany & Switzerland. Students were taken in two groups, wherein each group spent 7 days on this excursion. The first group arrived back in the country on 13th September, 2017, following which the second group set forth on their journey with a reroute on 20th September, 2017.68 students visited Germany & Switzerland – Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Zurich, Luzern and Engelberg. In addition, scholarly visits were made to Stuttgart Stock Exchange, Frankfurt Stock Exchange, MAN Truck Factory, the BMW Welt, Mercedes Museum, Ayinger Brewery & ETH University; the transit concluded with the apogee of all visits, Mount Titlis & the Rhein Falls. This uplifting exploration of international business, culture and life, opened the students to a new world, and transformed them into better informed & curious individuals.

The International Immersion 2015 at DSIMS comprised of 54 students (34 PGDM 1st year, 18 MMS 1st year and 2 Part Time Management students) who were accompanied by 3 Professors i.e. Prof Kusum Pawar, Prof Sharmila Bonnerjee & Prof Amal Roy.The International Immersion included 2 countries; Singapore followed by Thailand (Bangkok / Pattaya). The main aim of the immersion this year was to sensitize the students on the difference in the economies of the 2 countries including infrastructure, industries, cultural diversity, geographical advantage, tourism and education.

In Singapore the students visited 3 Industries to understand the functions and impact of those industries on the economy of Singapore.

1) Yakult Manufacturing Unit:: Mr Kuek Kok TI , Manager, PR & Advt & other Managers explained the benefits of PROBIOTIC drink for human health. The students were given a tour of the factory to understand Manufacturing, Marketing, Logistics & Supply Chain Management of Yakult.

2) S.P.Jain Management Institute:: Students were given a tour of the Institute. Dr Parvinder Arora (Prof & Asst Dean), Prof Veena Jadhav , Ms Mumtaz Moiz, Head of Singapore Campus explained pedagogy of learning, philosophy of SPJSOGM. The students were told about their tri-city Global Program.

3) PUB:: PUB (Public Utility Board), Marina Barrage, project by Singapore’s National Water Agency. The students were madde aware about Desalination of Sea Water, boosting of water supply, prevention of flooding in low lying areas, recreational facilities to promote tourism in Singapore.

The Industry Visits were also followed by few recreational activities. This activities included the visits to :
1) Universal Studio
2) Santosa Island
3) City Tour
These visits were done to make students understand the tourism industry in Singapore. These visits were also done to make the students understand the economic impact of the industries as well as to sensitize the students about the same as compared to Indian economy.

The visit of Singapore was followed by visit to Thailnad (Bangkok / Pattaya)
In Thailand we visited 3 Industry to understand the working of those industries in the economy of Thailand. Those companies were:

1) Castrol:: A plant near Bangkok, Thailand. Mr C Chaipitaksombat, Customer Fulfilment Manager & Mr Annart Hanwongpaiboon, Plant Manager explained the vision to achieve excellence in Safety, Quality, Service & Cost. The Unit has special position in Asia Pacific Region as per BP’s Global Supply Chain Policy. As per SWOT analysis, BP is assigning special importance to this Unit. The students were showed the manufacturing & Packing operation of the plant.

2) World Gem Factory (Pattaya):: During this visit students were shown all the precious stones found around Pattaya and how they import some of them. Students were also shown the cutting and the selling process.

3) MBK Mall (Bangkok):: Students were taken to MBK mall to understand the buying as well as the selling process of one of the very good wholesale mall in Thailand. Students came to know more about the selling and buying process and how it is different from the buying and selling process of India.

The Industry Visits were also followed by few recreational activities. This activities included the visits to :
1) Coral Island
2) Alcazar Show

These visits were done to make students understand the tourism industry in Thailand(Bangkok / Pattaya).

Overall the International Immersion was successful with the combined efforts of students and faculty that accompanied the students.

This year we took the students to Srilanka and Singapore exposing them to two different economies and business destinations. The students were exposed to the Securities Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) which is regulator in this country for effective, efficient and proactive capital market regulation. The group got knowledge of the stock exchange; The Colombo Stock Exchange is the main stock exchange in Sri Lanka. It is one of the most modern exchanges in South Asia, providing a fully automated trading platform. They also interacted with the Vice Chancellor of University of Srilanka where they were educated on the establishment and operations of the University of Colombo, the oldest university in Sri Lanka, which has 43 Academic Departments, 7 Institutes and several Centers and Units. The students were enriched with the visit to the Port of Colombo, being the premier port in the country has naturally become the focal point of the all Port development activities in Sri Lanka since the formation of the SLPA. They further visited manufacturing units and got erudite about the status of the manufacturing sector in the country. Similar experience was shared by the visit to Singapore, here the learning from the Public Utilities Board (PUB) which is a statutory board of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources under the Government of Singapore was excellent. The learning from the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS), which is a statutory board under the Ministry of Finance of the Singapore Government in charge of tax collection.Indeed an enriching experience for the students!
